The Monark Silver King Inc. (formerly Monark Battery Co.) began producing bicycles in 1935. Initially they only built aluminum bicycles and the Wingbar and Flocycle models are much sought after. In 1938 they began producing steel framed bikes which dominated their model line-up. After WWII they again offered an aluminum model, the Silver King, which collectors generally refer to as the “Hex Tube”. The Hex Tubes were made for three years 1946-48 and there were subtle differences between each year but all had the distinctive hex shaped frame. The frames were assembled without adhesives or welding. The tubes were frozen and then wedged into the lugs to create a friction fit once the tubes expanded upon thawing. The forks, chain guard, and rack were all chrome plated while the fenders were stainless steel to give the bike an all silver look. Today the “Hex Tube” is a favorite post war bike with collectors and is highly sought after. Owner: Shawn Sweeney
